Are inmates in prison that identify themselves as gay where they gay before going to prison or after?

When I watch Lock Up on MSNBC and other prison doentaries on Tru TV,NATGEO,and Discovery channels.Some inmates call themselves gay and they just accept it as a fact and get in trouble for ual miss conduct and one guy said I guess the guards have to start to accept me for who I am and I am gay.
